Frequently asked questions
Does "Characters" include spaces and line breaks?
Yes. The "Characters" count includes every character you typed, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Use "Characters (no spaces)" to exclude all whitespace.
How are words counted?
Words are runs of characters separated by whitespace. Korean is counted by space-separated units, so a word with its particles counts as one; Chinese or Japanese text without spaces counts as one word per unbroken run.
Why is the byte count larger than the character count?
Non-ASCII characters such as Korean, emoji or accented letters take 2–4 bytes in UTF-8. The byte count matters for SMS, database fields and some APIs.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server, and the text disappears when you close the page.
